Media Studies and Journalism (MSJ) department organised a day-long orientation program for its Summer 2018 intake at Campus B on June 7. Prof Dr Jude William R Genilo, head of MSJ department, delivered the welcome speech at the event organised by PR4U — an apprenticeship program of the department.
Following that, faculty members shared inspirational words with the freshman students. Assistant Professor Mohammad Shazzad Hossain, also MSJ Undergraduate Coordinator, made a PowerPoint presentation to get the newcomers associated with the department’s history and mission.
After that, Naimul Karim, a lecturer and MSJ internship coordinator, highlighted the importance of a portfolio in the current job market, and gave the students step-by-step guidelines on how to create their own portfolios. To motivate the freshman students, two short films made by MSJ students — “PothePothe” and “Dinghi” — were screened at the program.
Later, PR4U volunteers guided the freshmen to the designated rooms for a session with their respective advisors. After the sessions, the students took a tour around the campus, visiting media lab, library and so forth.
They were brought back to Campus B Seminar Room after a short break where representatives of different apprenticeship programs of the department — Radio CampBuzz, ULAB TV, CinemaScope, PR4U, Animation Studio, ShutterBugs — greeted the newcomers with an invitation to join their respective sides. The event ended at 4:00pm, with a takeaway Iftar meal for everyone.
