Media Studies and Journalism (MSJ) department organised an orientation program for its Fall 2018 intake at Campus B on October 11. Prof Dr Jude William R Genilo, head of MSJ department, delivered the welcome speech at the event organised by PR4U — an apprenticeship program of the department. Following that, faculty members shared inspirational words with the freshman students. Assistant Professor Mohammad Shazzad Hossain, also MSJ Undergraduate Coordinator, made a PowerPoint presentation to get the newcomers associated with the department’s history and mission. After that, Naimul Karim, a lecturer and MSJ internship coordinator, highlighted the importance of a portfolio in the current job market, and gave the students step-by-step guidelines on how to create their own portfolios. Professor Dr Shahnaj Husne Jahan of General Education Department (GED) talked about the importance of GED courses at ULAB.
To motivate the freshmen, two short films made by MSJ students — “Identity” and “Pothe Pothe” — and a music video named “The radio show”, were screened at the program. Later, PR4U volunteers guided the freshmen to the designated rooms for a session with their respective advisors. The freshmen were brought to seminar room again where a small mime act was presented by Hossain Ahmad Masum, president of Theatre ULAB. After the performance, representatives of different apprenticeship programs of the department — Radio CampBuzz, ULAB TV, CinemaScope, PR4U, Animation Studio, ShutterBugs — greeted the newcomers with an invitation to join their respective sides. PR4U member Zareen Islam hosted the entire event. After the session, the students took a tour around the campus, visiting media lab and so forth. They were then taken to canteen where lunch was served. This was followed by a beautiful music performance by Tahmeed Hossain Taha and Shachi Islam.
